As part of the panel discussion titled “Sustainable Cities: The Key to Economic Growth and Social Prosperity”, organized this year by the OT Forum, Evangelia Gklezakou, Senior Sustainability Manager at DIMAND, highlighted the importance of sustainability as a key factor for social and economic well-being.
Since sustainability is an integral part of DIMAND’s identity, Ms. Gklezakou highlighted that the company’s modern urban regeneration projects focus on lowering carbon emissions, responsible water and waste management, and most importantly, on social sustainability, noting that “cities are shaped by their people.”
She further noted that redeveloping underutilized building assets can become a catalyst for developing new local economies and reviving a neighborhood or area.
“The revival of even a single building has the potential to activate an entire neighborhood.”
The redevelopment of the Agios Dionysios area in Piraeus serves as a clear example, with over 7,500 people employed, new businesses opened, and significant municipal urban enhancements.
“Urban regeneration projects have a multiplier effect, as they not only transform the appearance of an area but also its functionality.”
Referring to businesses’ ongoing efforts to integrate ESG practices, Ms. Gklezakou stated that, although such investments may initially seem costly, they create long-term, high-value products that increase demand.
In closing, she mentioned that DIMAND focuses on high-standard office buildings as well as residential properties—including student, affordable, and urban housing—recognizing that housing is a key social issue. At the same time, particular emphasis is also placed on the hospitality sector, which remains strategic for our country.
